A string of explosions rocked Gaza City on Sunday, targeting cars belonging to officials from Islamic factions, including the Gaza Strip's Hamas rulers.

According to local media, five vehicles were targeted and two people were injured in Sunday morning's blast. Health officials could not immediately confirm the information.

The charred vehicles were parked outside the houses of the local officials in the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood. Local reports suggested that they belonged to well-known Gaza operatives affiliated with the Hamas military wing or Islamic Jihad.

Al Jazeera reported Sunday that a group affiliated with Islamic State claimed responsibility for the bombings. Witnesses said a freshly painted Islamic State group flag was seen at the site of the explosions.

Hamas recently launched a fierce crackdown on alleged IS supporters in the coastal enclave.
