Trump 2.0

On Wednesday, Donald Trump sent a message to those writing off his candidacy: Things are far from over. In fact, the race hasn't even started yet and the real campaign is only about to begin.

American voters typically begin to make up their minds on Labor Day, which this year falls on Sept. 5. Less than a week later, Americans will mark the 15th anniversary of 9/11, and two weeks later, the first of three presidential debates is scheduled to take place.

We should also brace for surprises in the coming weeks and months, be it from Russian hackers or from other online leaks. And let's not forget that Trump and his rival, Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, could both suffer from potential health issues (God forbid), which could reshape the race. It ain't over 'til it's over.

On Wednesday, Trump announced two major changes in the senior ranks of his campaign. Stephen Bannon, the executive chairman of the conservative site Breitbart News, was appointed campaign CEO, and Trump's senior strategist and pollster, Kellyanne Conway, was promoted to the position of campaign manager. This was a belated, yet necessary, move on his part, and it is expected to serve him well. According to The New York Times, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has recently pressured Trump to change things in his campaign and focus his message.

Campaign Chairman Paul Manafort will retain his title and will command the Trump ship. He will run strategy; they will oversee tactics and try to tweak Trump's day-to-day operations and hone his message, just six weeks before early voting begins (in some states).

The bottom line is that Trump can no longer afford to make mistakes. Trump and Clinton may not change in the next 80 days, but this is precisely the moment when they can reinvent themselves. Clinton has managed to turn these elections into a referendum on Trump, and now Trump will have to convince Americans to vote for him despite their misgivings. The changes he announced on Wednesday are a result of this effort.
