בצרפת לקחו קשה את ההפסד לנבחרת ארגנטינה בגמר המונדיאל הערב (ראשון). כמה שעות לאחר סיום המשחק, החלו בבירת המדינה פריז מהומות בין אוהדים ושוטרים.
המשטרה החלה לפזר ולעצור אוהדים בשאנז אליזה, והותקפה באבנים ובזיקוקים. השוטרים שנמצאים באזור ביומיים האחרונים לא נותנים לעוברי האורח לעבור הכביש מצד לצד - וככל הנראה זה מה שגרם לפרוץ המהומה.
