The noble savage is naked, and violent
Everyone likes the revolutionaries from Tahrir Square. They are Western, secular, enlightened. They represent our great hope: to live in a normal neighborhood. They are the neighbors that we would get along with. Certainly more than with the Muslim Brotherhood regime. Everyone loves them -- all the Western leaders, all the media outlets. Here too. Everyone wants them to succeed.
Unless, that is, we are referring to that small group called women. Just a little more than half of the population.
Because under the veil of love for the pro-Western revolutionaries, every day a number of women are gang raped. Some of them by a large gang. These rapes are reported in small print, in the back pages of the newspaper, so as not to spoil the party.
Some of these incidents were documented on film, but clearly they are just a fraction of the atrocities that take place. Not all rapists like to pose for the camera. Almost all the incidents that have been reported involved the attack of a Western reporter. They are more accessible to the media. According to an Egyptian women's organization, 63 women were assaulted between Sunday and Tuesday of this week. On Sunday alone, 46 women were attacked. By Wednesday evening, the number had risen to 100. And these were just the reported cases.
All in one square Tahrir.
The rapes that were documented often depicted a mob of men pouncing on one woman. At times her cries were audible. But what was missing from all the footage was the people who should have come to the victim's aid. I went through several videos, and none of them contained a single man not even one righteous gentile who tried to stop the unfolding atrocity. Incredible and terrifying: Mass rape, and not a single human being.
Since the beginning of this week, two rapes were caught on film. How many more rapes were there? How many horrible acts were not documented-
We only know one thing: Over here, everyone loves these revolutionaries. We ignore; focus on the mundane. As far as we are concerned, they are preferable.
It is much like the case of the man who called the doctor and yelled: "Doctor, you have to come quick, my son swallowed a razor."
"I am on my way," the doctor announced. "But tell me, have you done anything in the meantime-"
"Yes," the man replied. "I shaved using my electric shaver."
Side note
It turns out that deposed Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi was right: Allahu Akbar God is great.
Were we always like this-
These people are not the first despicable individuals that we have admired, as though they represent the myth of the noble savage. The murderers of the Palestinian collaborators were members of the Palestinian Authority our intimate partners. We saw people get butchered in the streets almost every day, tied up to telephone poles in the center of town, bodies dragged through the streets to the thrilled cries and applause of the crowd. We saw all this and continued to meet with the orchestrators, shake their hands in air conditioned rooms and discuss this or that agreement with them. We never asked ourselves whether it was appropriate to conduct negotiations with butchers of human beings, and whether a deal with such people held any kind of credibility.
"We have to understand them," said President Shimon Peres once, and he was entirely serious. "For them, lying is part of the culture." Then we understood. And then we were surprised to learn that killers and rapists don't honor agreements. What a shock.
Iron dome
If an indictment is filed against Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi Yona Metzger, will he come to court, as is customary at the defendant's table, wearing a large kippa-
There is hope
Welfare Minister Meir Cohen (Yesh Atid) has announced that he will ensure the welfare of the migrants from Sudan. That is wonderful news, because at this rate, there is chance that at some point he will begin caring about the Jews, too.
In praise of ignorance
On the one hand, every time the authorities perform a routine check of our teachers' general knowledge, it turns out, much to our embarrassment, that Israel's teachers excel in ignorance. On the other hand, this week an OECD study revealed that the teachers in Israel work less than teachers in other countries.
But it is precisely this revelation that sparks hope, because we wouldn't want this group of ignoramuses to spend more time with our children.
Which brings us to an old joke, with which Woody Allen opens his film "Annie Hall": Two elderly women are at a Catskill mountain resort, and one of them says, "Boy, the food at this place is really terrible." The other one says, "Yeah, I know; and such small portions."
As long as we're on the topic
This week, the Supreme Court began hearings on the prosecution's appeal of former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's corruption verdict. Among other things, the prosecution is appealing Olmert's acquittal in the cash-stuffed envelopes affair. The prosecution is trying to prevent a situation where a politician can receive such envelopes with the tacit approval of the court.
Well, here is an incident from the history of the Jewish people that may shed light on what happened.
A city in the U.S. wanted to build a new bridge. The mayor summoned three contractors and asked them to make an offer.
The Italian contractor arrived and offered to build the bridge for a million dollars.
"How did you arrive at that sum-" the mayor asked him.
"One third for materials, one third for the workers and one third profit," the contractor replied.
After him, arrived the Hispanic contractor, who offered to build the bridge for two million dollars. Again, the mayor asked for a breakdown.
"One third for materials, one third for the workers, and one third profit," said the Hispanic contractor.
Finally, the Jewish contractor arrived, and offered to build the bridge for three million dollars. The mayor told him: "You gave me the highest offer. How did you arrive at that sum-"
"A million for you, a million for me, and a million for the Italian for building the bridge," the Jew said.
