UK Jews have reason for concern

, עודכן

In the early 1970s, then-U.S. Secretary of State William Rogers raved to Leah Rabin, the wife of then-Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Yitzhak Rabin, about the strength of American-Israeli cooperation. "The relationship with you is the strongest thing after the Anglo-American alliance," he told her at a Washington dinner.

What will remain of the Washington-London axis now that Jeremy Corbyn has been elected to head the British Labour Party-

If, heaven forbid, he manages to win the premiership, he will remove England from the NATO alliance, support Russian aggression in Ukraine, and maintain ties with his "friends" from Hezbollah and Hamas, and England will be led by a man who donated money to the organization of a Holocaust denier.

Even if Corbyn is removed before the next elections, his ascent is astonishing. It is a testament to a dangerous groundswell very far removed from the British concept of democracy, and to the expanding influence of radical Marxism. Perhaps 91 years late, we will receive affirmation of the "Zinoviev letter," which in 1924 purported to be a directive from the Communist International in Moscow to the Communist Party of Great Britain. Will this take place under Corbyn's stewardship-

Such a thing would be a nightmare. What will remain of the West's legacy if Donald Trump wins the U.S. presidency, Corbyn is the next British prime minister, and Marine Le Pen is the new leader of France? Irresponsible and rash people would hold nuclear launch codes, and global balances could become unhinged by a geopolitical earthquake like the one currently hitting Europe.

Considering the circumstances, a quarter of a million Jews in England have reason to be fearful. Anti-Semitism is raising its head, and support for boycotting Israel will only grow with Corbyn as opposition leader. A poll conducted in England recently showed that 70% of the country's Jews are worried and afraid, and are now seeking to sit down with Corbyn to hear what he has to say, in the hope that he modifies his anti-Israel image.

Labour has always been distant toward Israel and the Jewish people compared to the conservatives. Lord Arthur James Balfour issued the declaration about a national homeland for the Jewish people in the Land of Israel; Winston Churchill, in the midst of World War II, established a governmental committee that supported the establishment of a Jewish state. The Labour government that succeeded Churchill, led by Ernest Bevin, persecuted the Jews in British Mandate Palestine and sought to prevent them from establishing the state.

With that, we fondly remember Harold Wilson and Tony Blair, and although international socialism has always been more important to Labour than recognizing the Jewish right to self-determination, both countries have known years of cooperation. Corbyn? Perhaps at the very least his newfound success will help Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remind the Jews of England as well that Israel's doors are open to them, and that the sooner they come the better. Perhaps something good can come of this after all.
