Charitable donations more than treble during Gaza operation

Not only were more Israelis giving to the country's charity groups, they were giving more money on average • Israelis living abroad open their wallets in a show of solidarity, increasing their average donation by about one-third.

Charity donations leapt by 375 percent during Operation Protective Edge, data published on Monday by the Israel Donates website shows.

Israel Donates is a site set up to facilitate online donation to more than 30,000 Israeli charities.

The average amount donated by locals also increased from NIS 320 to NIS 329 (from $93.80 to $96.44) during the Gaza campaign.

Interestingly, donations by Israelis living overseas increased even more, jumping 558 percent. Israelis abroad seem to have donated as a way of expressing solidarity with the nation. Like local residents, Israelis in foreign countries upped the amount they donated, with the average sum increasing from NIS 605 to NIS 816 ($177.34 to $239.19.)
