In honor of his 153rd birthday, the founding father of political Zionism, Theodor Herzl, received a special gift: his own Facebook page.

On the event of Herzl Day, which was observed on Sunday, the Education Ministry called on eighth graders to submit their proposals for the new page, from which one will be selected.

Herzl Day is an official holiday that celebrates the thinker's contribution to Zionism. It is usually observed on his birthday according to the Hebrew calendar.

According to the ministry, the new Facebook page will relate to the way Herzl's vision is expressed in modern-day Israel, and should inform readers about his ideas and their relevance today.

Education Minister Shay Piron issued a statement Sunday announcing the ministry's Facebook initiative and spelling out the criteria for the new Facebook profile. "Sixty-five years after the state's founding, the extent to which Herzl's vision is being realized is becoming more and more apparent. I believe that Herzl's vision will serve as an example and a light that shines the way forward for Israeli students, strengthens their sense of belonging to the state, and bolsters their engagement in efforts to build an exemplary society," Piron said in a statement.
