Israeli government and security websites crash due to glitch

For three hours on Wednesday, Internet pages for government ministries and security-related bodies were inaccessible • Network personnel discovered a glitch in a mainframe.

The Israeli Government Portal service, which maintains various websites for the government, experienced a mini crisis on Wednesday when several of the pages it operates crashed for three hours. Pages that were inaccessible during the incident included those of the Prime Minister's Office, Finance Ministry, Defense Ministry, Israel Defense Forces and Israel Security Agency.

When the pages went down at 11 a.m., network security personnel at first thought the crash was the result of a cyberattack. After a brief analysis of the situation, however, they realized there had been an operational failure in one of the mainframe systems, which have recently been updated.

The pages that were temporarily unavailable contained only unclassified information and services, such as the methods of payment of taxes and other civilian forms.

After three hours of work on the mainframe, the glitch was corrected and at 2.50 p.m. the pages came back online.

"The failure occurred due to an update process that the Government Portal service carried out," a Finance Ministry official said.

An IDF spokesman said, "A check performed by the Tehila company found that the failure occurred in a mainframe computer."

According to its web page, Tehila (the Hebrew acronym for the Governmental Infrastructure for the Internet Era), is the central body that provides government ministries and institutions with secure Internet services. The Tehila project began in 1997, in an effort to connect all government ministries to the Internet.
