An Arab youth stabbed a 19-year-old female Israeli soldier in the upper body, chest and arm Thursday morning, in what police are calling a nationalist-motivated terror attack. The stabbing occurred while the Jerusalem light-rail was stopped at a station on Yekutiel Adam street in the northern Jerusalem neighborhood of Pisgat Zeev at about 10:15 a.m. on Thursday. All north-bound Jerusalem light rail trains have been halted since the attack. According to Israel Radio, the attacker got onto the train two stations before the Pisgat Zeev station. At the Yekutiel Adam street station the attacker stood by the door, and as it opened he stabbed the woman soldier, who was in army uniform, and then fled. Dvir Adani, a volunteer with the Hatzolah organization who was at the scene, said he saw the woman lying unconscious on the floor. The soldier was evacuated to Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem and is said to be in serious condition. In a joint effort, the IDF and police apprehended the assailant at the Kalandia checkpoint between Jerusalem and Ramallah and detained him for questioning, Army Radio reported. The attack took place near the Shuafat refugee camp. While there is security at the light rail stations, it is at this point unclear if there was a guard present during the attack.
Israel Radio later reported that the suspect had confessed to having committed the stabbing.
