A Jewish youth who rushed at a soldier on duty at the Hizma checkpoint northeast of Jerusalem while holding a knife was shot and killed on Tuesday. The incident took place at approximately 4 p.m. Tuesday, when the 19-year-old resident of Pisgat Ze'ev neighborhood in Jerusalem approached the checkpoint on foot and, knife in hand, began running toward a female soldier on duty. A security guard who saw him and thought that the youth was a terrorist who intended to perpetrate a stabbing attack. Following procedures, the guard shot the young man. The youth sustained critical wounds and died in hospital a short while later. A police spokeswoman said in a statement that "the troops felt they were in immediate danger and took measures to ... neutralize him." When police investigators arrived at the home of the youth's mother to inform her that her son had been killed, they learned that a good friend of her son had found a suicide note he left behind. The friend told the police that in the past few days, the young man -- who was rejected for IDF service -- had talked with him about his mental health issues and feeling of distress.
