The Culture and Sport Ministry announced the winners of the Culture Minister's Prize Wednesday. The 43 winners, in the fields of literature, poetry, translation and editing, will divide 926,000 shekels ($242,473) in prize money. Each will receive between NIS 12,000 and NIS 30,000 (between $3,142 and $7,855). "We are a People of the Book and as such we can take pride in the best works of literature, for which their writers won prizes. I am pleased with the variety of works that reflects the rich culture of Israeli society," Culture Minister Miri Regev said. "I have set a goal for 2017 to promote reading, expand the number of libraries in Israel, make them more accessible to the public and enrich them with books and content," she said. "This way we will bring the people of the book back to the books." The winners of the New Author prize were decided by a committee headed by author Moshe Sakal. The winners were Yael Geller, Michal Peer, Hila Amit, Julia Fermentto, Yuval Lieberman, Galia Tanai, Ilan Yoav Gal-Peer, Noa Suzanna Morag, Rachel Shalita and Itzhak Livni. Winners of the New Poet prize were decided by a committee, headed by poet Elhai Salomon, and included Nadia Adina Ross, Eyal Shalom, Mirale Moshe Alvo, Alon Bar, Omer Waldman, Reuven Cohen Tzemach, Noa Shakarji, Omri Sharet, Meital Hazohar and Yehezkel Rahamim. Five prizes were given for children's books and teen fiction, a category named for famed Israeli author Deborah Omer. The prize for Best Children's Book was awarded to Ayelet Sade for her book "Born From a Crocodile Egg," and the prize for Best Youth Book was awarded to Zehava Goshen and Maayan Ben Hagai for their book "Gudai." Special Lifetime Achievement prizes were given to authors Nira Harel and Uri Orlev. The First Edition Publishing prize was given to Pardes, Even Hoshen, Emda, Bialik Institute, Miskal, Hakibbutz Hameuchad and Keter publishing houses. Hakibbutz Hameuchad also won for Most Outstanding Books. The Translation prize went to Aminadav Dykman, Rama Ayalon, Erez Walk and Bruria Ben Baruch. The Editor prize was given to Yehuda Meltzer. He is the publisher of Books in the Attic publishing house.
The prize is given out every year to promote works of literature, emphasizing new and young artists.
