"Israel is involved in a security affair that may place lives at risk," Deputy Regional Cooperation Minister Ayoob Kara revealed recently in a Facebook post. The affair in question is subject to a comprehensive gag order, and Kara has been criticized for violating a Military Censor order by mentioning it. The post has since been removed. Rejecting criticism, Kara said Monday, "I've decided to come forward because it is my conscience that shoulders this responsibility. I'm concerned about this issue, so I made it public. Now we can fight on every front." He did not elaborate further. Kara's office issued a statement saying, "The affair in question is one of civilian nature. MK Kara acted as a responsible public official, given human circumstances he had learned about. Making this issue public followed a request by the parties involved, and at the time no gag order was in place." Rami Igra, former MIA Division head for the Mossad, told Army Radio Tuesday that Kara "placed lives at risk, and there's room to consider pressing charges against him. The law is the law, even when you're an MK," he said. Kara, a Druze politician, told Army Radio that he believes he has done nothing wrong. "I'm being targeted because I'm not Jewish," he said. "I'm as Israeli and as Jewish as they come and there is no doubt as to where my loyalty lies. The truth will come out and I will prevail." He further insisted that he has been dealing with similar cases without the defense establishment's permission for the past two years. "I've saved people, so making such allegations against me is petty." Asked why he removed the original Facebook post, Kara told Army Radio, "I'm a law-abiding man, and once there was a gag order demanding nothing becomes public, I removed the post. But the person behind it is a petty individual who can influence the media. That's why everything I say is being twisted." A statement by Zionist Union accused the government of "jeopardizing [national] security by spreading military secrets and sensitive information in all directions.
