A unique competition to design a new home for the Israel Air Force Museum at Hatzerim Air Base in southern Israel was announced on Sunday by the Defense Ministry's Engineering and Construction Department in conjunction with the Israel Association of United Architects. According to the announcement, the contestants will be asked to present a distinctive, "modern and innovative" concept for an aviation and space museum that will serve as a "heritage center for the Air Force and a display window to the world of aviation." Details of the competition's criteria were published on the Defense Ministry's website on Sunday. The IAF Museum at Hatzerim was founded 25 years ago by former IAF pilot and former Beersheba Mayor Yaakov Turner, who at 81 is still the museum's legendary director. The Defense Ministry said the new museum will be built on the site of the current one, at the entrance to the Hatzerim Air Base. Aside from a few structures that will be preserved, the museum will be completely new. The Air Force's Construction Division, the Defense Ministry's Engineering and Construction Department and the Israel Association of United Architects have joined forces on the project. A similar competition format was used for planning the recently completed IDF Homefront Command's National Center for Israeli Resilience, considered trailblazing in the field of architectural design. The Defense Ministry believes dozens of the leading architectural firms in Israel will participate in the competition. Turner will be on the panel of judges, as will Hatzerim Base Commander Brig. Gen. Avshalom Amosi. The winner will receive a prize of 100,000 shekels ($26,000).
