Israeli man murdered in Nigeria in attempted kidnapping

Preliminary investigation reveals that four men arrived at the construction site near the capital, Abuja, where 43-year-old Nir Rozmarin worked, to kidnap him for ransom purposes • Foreign Ministry is organizing the transfer of his body to Israel.

Nir Rozmarin, 43, and Israeli citizen employed by a construction firm, was murdered in Nigeria on Tuesday during an attempted kidnapping near the capital city of Abuja. His family has been notified.

Preliminary investigation revealed that four men arrived at the construction site where Rozmarin worked to kidnap him for ransom purposes -- a familiar routine in the African country.

During the incident, a guard at the site tried to stop the kidnappers with the help of another Israeli worker. In his attempt to escape his abductors during the struggle, Rozmarin was shot and fatally wounded. The guard was lightly wounded after sustaining injuries to his upper limbs, and the other Israeli at the scene was unharmed.

A Chabad emissary in Nigeria, Rabbi Israel Uzan, is helping the Foreign Ministry and Israel's embassy there to organize the transfer of the body.

Upon receiving the news of his death friends and family members arrived at the Rozmarins' residence in Kfar Saba to console his wife and four children.

"Nir was a salt-of-the-earth, intelligent and good-humored man who would do anything to support his wife and kids," said Guy Goldig, Rozmarin's brother-in-law.

"Nir loved his wife Dimor dearly as they had been together for many years. The distance from the family was difficult for him, but he kept in touch daily via Skype and WhatsApp," he said.
