Deputy State Prosecutor Shai Nitzan on Thursday ordered police to investigate cases involving soldiers who published degrading images of Palestinian detainees. The investigations will target three Israel Defense Forces soldiers who posted photographs to Facebook showing them seated next to a handcuffed and blindfolded Palestinian. In one image, a soldier is aiming his weapon at the detainee. Another soldier will be investigated for a YouTube clip that shows him dancing around a handcuffed and blindfolded female Palestinian detainee while music plays in the background. Despite the order, the deputy state prosecutor will not launch a criminal investigation against discharged IDF soldier Eden Abergil, who uploaded pictures to Facebook showing her seated and smiling in front of a handcuffed and blindfolded Palestinian man. Nitzan said that Abergil's actions, which took place more than three years ago, were disgraceful, yet do not provide grounds for criminal proceedings against her, only disciplinary ones. "I've had a rough year," Abergil told Israel Hayom on Thursday. "Everything that happened seriously hindered my advancement in life. In retrospect, I regret that I published the pictures. Today I look at soldiers who do the same thing and I get annoyed. It's inappropriate. As it is we always come out looking bad."
'Disgraceful - but not criminal'
State Prosecutor: No case against Eden Abergil, the soldier who took photos with handcuffed Palestinians • Criminal investigation launched against another soldier who danced around female detainee.
