After the U.K., Ireland, Spain and Sweden, among others, gave some level of recognition to a Palestinian state, now it is France's turn. The parliamentary resolution, sponsored by the ruling Socialist Party, would give symbolic recognition to Palestine, but the French government regards it as nonbinding. It is expected to pass, despite opposition by former President Nicolas Sarkozy, who heads the conservative UMP party. Why is the French parliament making this move now?
