92-year-old has 2nd circumcision after first deemed invalid

Bashi Gabai, first circumcised as a baby in his native Iran, is re-circumcised in Israel • He is likely the world's oldest recipient of the ritual procedure • His 40-year-old son and other male relatives also undergo re-circumcision.

A 92-year-old man from Or Yehuda has likely become the world's oldest recipient of one of Judaism's oldest traditions, a ritual circumcision. Bashi Gabai, along with several younger male relatives, underwent the ritual circumcisions after their first circumcisions, performed in their birth place of Shiraz, Iran, were deemed invalid. Circumcision, or "brit milah," is traditionally performed when a boy is eight days old.

The procedures were done by the Brit Yosef Yitzchak organization in Israel, which performs circumcisions for free for infants and adults.

"Today, the procedure is very simple. We have operating rooms in Bat Yam. A doctor and mohel [ritual circumciser] perform local anesthesia and then it's done with," said Rabbi Shimon Rahamim, a mohel in the organization and rabbi in south Tel Aviv.

Gabai's son said he was "very excited" for his father's brit, and he too underwent the procedure, at the age of 40.

In the Bible, the oldest person to undergo Jewish ritual circumcision was Abraham, who did so at the age of 99.
