Jewish activists in London are outraged at the recent publication of a new comic book that features Hitler as a fashionable character called "Hipster Hitler." The book is based on a veteran web comic by the same name that stars the infamous Nazi fuhrer Adolf Hitler wearing thick-framed glasses and joke T-shirts. According to the British weekly Hampstead & Highgate Express, a group of Jewish activists have threatened to buy and shred all copies of the book, describing the satirizing of Hitler as "anti-Semitic" and "sick." The activist group, calling itself London Stands with Israel, are focusing mainly on a Jewish-owned comic store in Camden Town, according to the report. The creators of the comic wrote on their website that Hipster Hitler was not created with the "intent of offending people." "We're offering a new way of disliking Hitler and laughing at the 'lazy dictator' he was, who is known for being indolent, maniacal at times, with violent bursts of enthusiasm," they say. "In the process of satirizing Hitler's thoughts, actions and logic, we're taking a few digs at a contemporary subculture of urban, middle-class youth that fetishize the 'authentic' and conform to non-conformism." But the activists are not impressed. The Hampstead & Highgate Express quoted London Stands with Israel member Ilana Katz as saying "If we can't get shops to stop selling copies, we'll buy and shred them all. Since when was it okay to promote Hitler as a cool person-" Shania Angel, another member of the group, was quoted as saying, "It is offensive to people like me who have had family members killed in the Holocaust. Anti-Semitism has skyrocketed recently and we shouldn't be selling books like this.
