A group of some 500 children from southern Israel visited the Knesset on Sunday. The children enjoyed a number of activities and met with Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein (Likud).

"The colorful atmosphere here speaks for itself," Edelstein said. "There are smiles and happiness from the kids during the break here in the Knesset."

Children in the south of the country have been particularly hard-hit by the current violent confrontation between Israel and Hamas, which escalated just as summer vacation began. Day camps in a number of towns in the south have been canceled in the face of ongoing rocket fire from Gaza.

Since Israel launched Operation Protective Edge last week, some 1,000 rockets have been launched at Israel. While most have targeted the south -- with a few Israelis seriously wounded and a number of buildings sustaining serious damage -- the Iron Dome missile defense system has also intercepted rockets over the greater Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and Rehovot areas.
