Syrian rebels are planning a chemical attack on Israel to provoke the U.S. into acting against the Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime, according to Arabic language Russian news outlet Rusiya Al-Yaum on Monday.
The report, citing Russia Today sources, claims that "armed militants" belonging to the opposition will use Syrian regime controlled territory to stage their attack.
Israeli media noted the prevalence of the report on pro-Assad outlets, Rusiya Al-Yaum also being considered a pro-regime periodical, something which raises speculation as to whether the report is in fact propaganda.
The Assad regime has accused the rebels of using chemical weapons on multiple occasions in the past. With the threat of a U.S. led strike on Syria ever present, a chemical attack on Israel would undoubtedly spur the U.S. in to action.
