Trump takes over the discourse

This was a good week for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. His visit to Mexico and his meeting with the host president, the email scandal that has become an inseparable part of the coverage of Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, and his improved standing in the polls all go to show that it's too early to count Trump out.

Donald Trump continues to be the one who sets the tone. He did it in the primaries, and he's still doing it today. Trump has taken over the discourse. Whether it's positive or negative, people are talking almost exclusively about him. And if they do talk about Hillary, it's about issues such as the email scandal or the Clinton Foundation and her meetings with donors while serving as secretary of state. Lots of donors. To the Clinton Foundation, of course.

Trump is also turning out to be a candidate who moves around. He recently visited Wisconsin and did not hesitate to align himself with the police -- including those discriminating against black Americans -- as part of his desire to be the law and order candidate. He knew to visit Louisiana after the flooding there, causing President Barack Obama to change his plans and visit there, too. On Wednesday, Trump left for Mexico to meet with its president and tell him some hard truths.

The photos of Trump and President Enrique Pena Nieto at a joint press conference said a lot. Suddenly, his campaign took on a presidential character that had been Clinton's ground. Trump's remarks at the press conference, his tone and his conduct were all serious. He represented his country with dignity, even as a candidate and not as president. And where was Clinton? Running a little behind. And take a look at the polls.

When he returned from Mexico, Trump gave his immigration speech in Arizona. Once again, he was controlling the discourse. Some saw a certain moderation in his speech after he chose this time to skip his idea about deporting the 11 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. Nevertheless, some saw the exact same Trump that existed prior to his apology in Charlotte, North Carolina, two weeks ago. He is against clemency for illegal immigrants, in favor of building a wall, and wants Mexico to pay for it, not the American taxpayers.

We need to remember that the liberal media doesn't like Trump and will attack anything he says. But before the primaries, that same media failed to take him seriously, and in the end were forced to eat crow. It probably wasn't very tasty, so given Trump's conduct this week, the media should keep an eye on how he handles himself, since he might become president.
