Heed the warning

The defiant graffiti spray-painted on the walls of the Supreme Court on Wednesday, protesting the planned demolition of a synagogue in Givat Ze'ev that had been built on privately owned Palestinian land, served as a warning: The religious-cultural clash within Israeli society is becoming ever more extreme. This was yet another idiotic attempt to claim that Judaism runs contrary to democracy. The truth is that the pinnacle of human creation, the Bible, never allows justice to yield to public convenience.

The fact is that the people who built the synagogue took over land that wasn't theirs. The representatives of the Givat Ze'ev community agreed to evacuate the synagogue but demanded authorization for more than 200 new housing units in exchange. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the demand -- this is not the time to start building beyond the Green Line, five days before Netanyahu's scheduled meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama. Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon tried to resolve the situation by offering the congregation a large military caravan for use as a temporary synagogue until a permanent structure is built.

But sadly the Givat Ze'ev community refuses to listen. The quick-tempered leaders of the community have recruited the largely upstanding young people and convinced them to physically bar Israel Defense Forces troops from fulfilling the High Court of Justice's instructions and demolishing the synagogue.

At the end of the day, there is going to be a painful clash between brothers over an issue that has no real justification. There are people who are igniting a bad fire in the hearts of youngsters who simply have a burning love for Israel. And worse yet, no one is taking responsibility and stopping these forbidden and emotionally inciting efforts, like Wednesday's graffiti incident. (Where are the court guards-)

The next generation of settlers needs to understand that it can't thrive on misdeeds. Don't they teach them about Naboth the Jezreelite in school-
