Khamenei, we're not going anywhere

"God willing, there will be nothing as Zionist regime by next 25 years" -- this is the blessing for the upcoming Rosh Hashanah that Israel got yesterday from Iran's spiritual leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Since we in Israel don't have suicidal tendencies -- the opposite -- we can assume that the Iranians have very clear-cut plans to keep us from making it to 2040 (5800 on the Jewish calendar).

And yet the world is still surprised that Israel and its allies have a problem with the nuclear agreement, which even its Democratic supporters in Congress admit is imperfect. Iran hasn't changed, and it's proud of that. And we're supposed to thank U.S. President Barack Obama?

Anyone who thought that the Iranian nuclear matter was behind us now that Obama has secured a deal, the needed congressional support, and a legacy, wasn't on Capitol Hill yesterday. Opponents of the agreement aren't giving up. The story is too serious, too dangerous, too bizarre, to move on.

Two leading Republican presidential candidates, Donald Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz, took part in a demonstration on Capitol Hill to protest the deal before it is debated on September 17. They both had harsh words about the deal, and especially the person who signed off on it. So of course, there will be those who will say that both the Republican candidates, just like Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, are on the wrong side of history. Is that also true of the 49% of the American public who oppose the deal, as a poll by the well-known Pew Research Center indicates? Are the 21% who support the agreement the only ones who, like Obama, understand exactly where the unstable world in which we live is headed?

The nuclear deal with Iran shouldn't be a black hole we get sucked into just because Obama decided so. Of course, some will take the deal as a fait accompli and, possibly because of their concern for Israel, think about the day after and even what Israel will get out of it. But in the face of the deal, and the reality, we can't forget about it and move on just because the U.S. president managed to foist an agreement on us despite the will of the people -- his own as well as ours.

Yesterday Hillary Rodham Clinton, the leading Democratic candidate for president, discussed the Iran deal. It was obviously a great opportunity for her to escape from the embarrassing email scandal that dates back to when she served as secretary of state and is now hurting her in the polls. Clinton explained that even if it wasn't perfect, this was a strong deal that blocked Iran's progress toward a nuclear bomb. She also took care to note that without a deal, there could be no oversight. She just forgot to add that the oversight at the Parchin military facility is expected to be Iranian. So we can all calm down.

Right now, since we're focused on our future and the future of our children, let's examine the reliability of the speaker. Since March, Ms. Clinton has claimed that she did not commit any crime in the matter of her emails and that she even had permission from the State Department to send email from her private account.

But yesterday, she admitted that she had made a mistake and even apologized for it. So what does that say about her? Maybe 25 years from now she'll apologize again, this time to us, if heaven forbid we find that she was wrong in her assessment of the Iran deal.

With all due respect, we are not prepared to take risks. We plan to eat apples and honey to mark the New Year in 2015, and do the same in 2040.

We'll be eating apples, and Khamenei -- if he's still around them -- will eat his hat.
