Islamic State must be eliminated

There will be more terrorist attacks in France, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said on Saturday. Unfortunately, Valls is correct. There will be more attacks, both in France and in many other countries around the world. No continent is safe from terrorism, except perhaps Antarctica, but one can die from the cold there. There is nowhere to run. Terrorism knows no borders and is spreading everywhere.

Friday was a particularly dark day. Jihadi terrorists conducted attacks on three different continents, almost simultaneously. In the name of Allah, people were killed in Tunisia (at least 37 fatalities), Kuwait (at least 27 fatalities) and France (one death, by beheading). Terrorism reared its ugly head once again. Think about how absurd is it that in Kuwait the victims were Muslim worshippers taking part in Friday prayers. Jihadi terrorists have a very broad definition of what defines an infidel.

On Monday, the Islamic State group will mark the one-year anniversary of its establishment of a caliphate in Syria and Iraq. What better way was there for it to celebrate this than with what took place on Friday? Islamic State now specializes in exporting terrorism. This is not an encouraging sign for the future.

Although there is still no proof the three attacks on Friday were coordinated by Islamic State leaders (who claimed responsibility for two of the three attacks), they all were carried out in the spirit of Islamic State. Beheadings, like what happened in France, are an Islamic State trademark.

While the civilized people of the world are sickened by Islamic State, there are many other people who view it as a source of pride and role model. Last month, an Al Jazeera poll found that 81% of people in the Arab world sympathize with Islamic State. And to think that most of Islamic State's victims are Muslims. In a normal world, we all would be joining together to fight this virus. But in the hypocritical world we live in, the international community is in fact ganging up on those who fight terrorism.

Islamic State is particularly irrational, and this poses the biggest problem for those trying to understand the group. Islamic State must be eliminated -- no ifs, ands or buts. Yet there are many who do not realize this and are satisfied with sporadic airstrikes against the group, even as it spreads death and mayhem around the world.

On Thursday, Islamic State carried out a horrific massacre of 150 people in the Kurdish city of Kobani in northern Syria. This was a shocking event, yet the world was silent.

So what does Islamic State do? It exports terrorism to places like Tunisia and Kuwait to influence public opinion. In France, the Western country currently most exposed to jihadist terrorism, Islamic State does not even need to make much of an effort anymore. Apparently, it now has independent agents there.

The three attacks on Friday all had special significance. The attack against a Shiite mosque in Kuwait reminded us of the tensions that exist between Sunnis and Shiites, as if the 680 C.E. Battle of Karbala took place just yesterday.

The attack in Tunisia was also depressing. Tunisia is a welcoming Arab country to which hundreds of thousands of foreign tourists flock every year. Tunisia is where the Arab Spring was born in late 2010 and we all know the rest of that sad story. Tunisia, perhaps the only Arab country to have developed a true middle class, has turned into a terrorist state. The Salafis, al-Qaida and now Islamic State will do everything they can to turn Tunisia now into what Algeria was in the past.

And, of course, let's look at France. In January, France thought it had seen everything -- successive attacks against the editorial board of a magazine and Jews. But France never imagined that a native-born citizen would cut off the head of his boss and hang it on a fence in the name of religious fanaticism.

France understands, as expressed by its prime minister, that it is extremely exposed to terrorism today. Remember the string of four ramming and stabbing attacks in France in December 2014 in which the assailants yelled "Allahu akbar!" (God is great)? The explanation was always that the perpetrators of these attacks were "insane." A month later, the Kouachi brothers and Amedy Coulibaly joined the list of the "insane," as did Yassin Sahli on Friday.

In January 2014, U.S. President Barack Obama told us Islamic State was nothing more than a junior varsity basketball team. Well this JV squad put on quite a macabre show for the world on Friday.

While Obama can boast of his liberal achievements at home, such as the Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage, which are currently getting all the headlines in the U.S., I regret that I must spoil the president's party -- in the war on terror, he is getting a failing grade.
