Be careful out there

Around 30 countries -- among them five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, eight Arab states along with Turkey and Japan -- decided on Monday that the Islamic State group (ISIS) is not only a threat to Iraq, but also to the entire world.

It can be said that officially, the international community passed the looming black flag of terror from al-Qaida to ISIS. In the Middle East we have already grown accustomed to one ill being replaced by something worse. What's new-

French President Francois Hollande, the host of the summit, had an opportunity yesterday to escape his troubles on the domestic front. The unflattering polls over the weekend chased him all the way to Iraq. The French air force on Tuesday began flying over the north of the splintered state, which positions Paris today as the primary partner in U.S. President Barack Obama's coalition against ISIS. For the meantime, incidentally, the flights are of an intelligence-gathering nature. The bombing runs are sure to eventually follow.

Meanwhile, it wouldn't hurt the French, Belgians, Brits, Turks and other summit attendees to enhance their intelligence gathering abilities at home as well. Although ISIS has conquered wide swathes of northern Iraq and 25 percent of Syria, it is already present in the suburbs and large cities of Europe as well.

Mehdi Nemouche, the 29-year-old French national of Algerian descent who perpetrated the deadly terrorist shooting at the Jewish Museum in Brussels last May, belonged to the radical Sunni group. ‎Mohamed Merah, who committed the fatal terrorist shooting attack in Toulouse, also fit the group's profile.

Turkey, which does not want to join the fighting, has become a central crossing point for ISIS operatives entering Syria and Iraq. Turkey has every reason in the world to fear the group.

The less soothing news out of Paris yesterday is that the entire world has become a battle front -- despite Obama's promise to us in 2012 that the war on terror had defeated the heart of al-Qaida. Under the radar we got ISIS: an even more murderous organization, more deranged, more violent and with bigger aspirations. The scary part in the ISIS story is the enthusiasm it arouses among Muslim youth, those who lived in the West and detest it.

The danger is waiting in the weeds, around every corner. While the world intends to attack ISIS on its turf, it also needs to be ready to get hit on the home front. No one has forgotten how terrorism in recent years has put New York, Madrid and London on the front lines.

Many Israelis, it can be expected, will travel abroad during the upcoming holiday season and compensate for their summer vacations lost due to the terror from Gaza. They will, however, need to keep their eyes open while on vacation as well. Precisely like Hamas terrorists, ISIS terrorists also have priorities: From their perspective, Israelis will always be prime targets. And the problem with ISIS is that anyone can be a member.
