Let's not fool ourselves

This weekend we received reports out of Syria, from the Assad regime and from the opposition, confirming that chemical weapons have been used again in Syria. Both sides have blamed the other.

The fact that the murderous Assad regime has already used chemical weapons -- more than 15 times since the onset of the civil war -- makes it the primary suspect.

And what about the world? Was it naïve enough to think that U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry's deal with the Russians would lead to the dismantlement of Syria's chemical arsenal? In actuality, under the cover of the agreement, civilians are continuing to be slaughtered.

Israeli officials warned at the time that easing sanctions following the Geneva agreement (in November 2013) was liable to give the Iranians too much breathing room. A new report reveals that the deal not only gives the Iranians breathing room, it gives them oil, and much more than initially intended. Iran today exports a much larger amount of oil than is permitted. In Washington, officials have declared that "Iran won't break its promise." But Iran is already breaking it; and this merely pertains to its oil sales. Imagine what will happen when they lie -- and they will -- about the nuclear deal. In essence, Iran continues to gather strength and issue threats under the guise of this deal.

Let's not fool ourselves; Iran and Syria have not changed. It's comfortable for the world to think that these dark regimes are stepping in line with the West. But, really, these regimes are just adapting to the situation.

If someone wants proof of how confident these regimes are feeling in today's spineless world, he is invited to see who the Iranians chose to represent them in the United Nations -- Hamid Aboutalebi -- who was involved in the takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran in 1979. Iran's contempt knows no limits.
