Israel, get ready

Just when everyone is awaiting the publication of the harshest report yet on Iran's nuclear program by the International Atomic Energy Agency -- which will reveal the ayatollah regime's efforts to develop nuclear weapons to the world -- the agency exposes new discoveries about Iran's ally, Syria. Jerusalem has plenty of reasons to worry, and to prepare.

How ironic. The Iranians on Tuesday continued their efforts at the U.N. to promote the idea of worldwide nuclear disarmament. One hundred and seven members of the General Assembly voted in favor of the Iranian draft resolution to discuss nuclear non-proliferation and international security. The U.S. and Israel opposed the proposal. But what's that in comparison with 107 member states-

Agency inspectors discovered a secret facility in northwestern Syria that is an exact replica of a uranium enrichment plant built in Libya when Moammar Gadhafi (remember him-) sought to develop nuclear weapons. In a "rare coincidence," the international community discovers that the Libyan facility was developed with Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, the father of Pakistan's nuclear program, and now it turns out that the same Khan has corresponded with senior officials in the Syrian government who had ties to the country's nuclear weapons program.

Remember how we were surprised by Pakistan's successful nuclear tests in 1998? It seems that the nuclear club of the wicked will serve up more surprises if we continue to sit idly by and allow it to do so. We have already seen Damascus pursue a plutonium route to nuclear weapons, which was exposed after Israel bombed the nuclear reactor in Dir al Zour in September 2007 (according to foreign reports). Now we see that Damascus is seeking to acquire nuclear weapons by means of another path, uranium.

The Syrians, for their part, claim the site is a textile factory that processes cotton. It must be particularly high-quality cotton produced exclusively in Syria; otherwise it is hard to understand the Syrians' reluctance to allow inspectors to visit the site.

The agency is seeking to declare Syria a rogue state, as it is a signatory to a treaty that requires it to allow inspectors in. It is violating international obligations by refusing. When the subject of imposing harsh sanctions against Damascus came up last May at the U.N. Security Council, Russia and China once again did not disappoint Damascus, just as they do not disappoint Tehran at every possible opportunity.

One morning the world woke up to news of the bombing in Syria, which to remind you, had never before been the subject of a public hearing. Given the new discovery, would we even have needed one-
