Well, this must have been an absolutely terrifying few minutes for thousands of people across Japan! On Friday 16th October, Japan's Meteorological Agency (JMA) accidentally issued an emergency warning for a magnitude 9.9 earthquake, triggering emergency alerts and safety procedures across large parts of the country. And yes, you read that correctly… 9.9! That's an absolutely enormous earthquake magnitude, and if an earthquake of that size had genuinely occurred, the consequences could have been catastrophic. JUST LOOK AT THE VIDEO! You can see people sitting down as emergency safety procedures are activated. Imagine enjoying your day out, perhaps thinking about which ride to go on next, when suddenly earthquake warnings start sounding! Forget the rollercoasters that would certainly get your heart racing! SO WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED? At approximately 12:40pm local time, Japan's earthquake early warning system issued an alert predicting extremely powerful shaking. The system had incorrectly estimated that a magnitude 9.9 earthquake had occurred near the Kuril Islands, north of Japan. In reality, an earthquake measuring approximately magnitude 6.9 had occurred near Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula. Unfortunately, an error in the automated processing system resulted in the earthquake's location and magnitude being calculated incorrectly. The emergency warning was cancelled approximately eight minutes later, at 12:48pm. But those eight minutes must have felt considerably longer for everyone receiving the alerts! TRAINS STOPPED AND EMERGENCY PROCEDURES ACTIVATED The warning caused disruption across parts of Japan. Some high-speed railway services were temporarily suspended as automatic earthquake protection systems activated. Emergency alerts sounded on mobile phones, and people were instructed to take precautions against potentially severe shaking. Thankfully, the devastating earthquake predicted by the warning had not actually occurred. HERE'S SOMETHING INTERESTING! Earthquake magnitude is measured on a logarithmic scale. That means a magnitude 9.9 earthquake would release approximately 31,600 times more energy than a magnitude 6.9 earthquake! So you can understand why such a warning would be taken extremely seriously. Japan has one of the world's most advanced earthquake early warning systems. These systems detect the first seismic waves from an earthquake and attempt to provide people with precious seconds to protect themselves before stronger shaking arrives. However, because these calculations happen incredibly quickly, using preliminary information, mistakes can occasionally occur. WHAT HAS JAPAN'S METEOROLOGICAL AGENCY SAID? The agency has apologised for the incorrect warning and is investigating what went wrong. And although this was a false alarm, it's important to remember that these systems save lives by giving people time to take protective action. Personally, I'd rather see people taking cover for an earthquake that doesn't happen than ignoring a warning when a dangerous earthquake really is approaching. One thing is certain: that was probably more excitement than anyone visiting a theme park had planned for! Have a look at the video below. Could you imagine hearing a magnitude 9.9 earthquake warning while enjoying a day out? Stay safe, everyone. Kind regards, KWT Dave Kernow Weather Team From moor to shore, we've got Cornwall covered.
