The IDF said Wednesday that Israeli soldiers shot and killed a Palestinian gunman who opened fire on them during a raid of an arms cache in Hebron. The Israeli military said forces were on a mission to find illegal weapons when the incident occurred. The Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed the death of the man but did not immediately release details of his identity. The Israeli military frequently carries out patrols and searches in Palestinian areas looking for suspects and munitions. On Wednesday, the IDF released a picture of the makeshift weapon they had seized, known by its street name "Carlo." This improvised gun has emerged as the firearm of choice for Palestinian terrorists. Since 2015, Palestinian attackers have killed 43 Israelis, two visiting Americans and a British student. In that period, some 251 Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire. Israel identified most of them as terrorists. Israel blames the violence on incitement by the Palestinian leadership. U.S.-brokered peace talks between the sides broke down in 2014, but U.S. President Donald Trump has vowed to try to reach a "historic deal" between the sides. His envoys met Israeli and Palestinian leaders last week to try to relaunch negotiations but there has been no indication when they might actually resume.
