An Israeli hang glider pilot was killed in what is believed to be an accident during a competition in northern Portugal on Monday. The Foreign Ministry is working to retrieve the man's body for burial in Israel.

The competition in Fundao, Portugal was canceled in light of the accident and the Portuguese Aviation Accidents Prevention and Investigation Department has begun an investigation in to the death.

The pilot, a man in his 30s, apparently crashed into a tree only a few hundred feet away from the final landing area, though the details of the incident are still being verified. It is believed that weather did not play a role in the accident, as there were ideal conditions that day.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Jonathan Rosenzweig said the ministry was in contact with the deceased's family. "There is still no specific date for the transfer of the coffin, we hope it will be as soon as possible. We are in contact with the Portuguese authorities," he said.
