The Ometz association for good governance and social justice on Sunday called on Attorney-General Yehuda Weinstein to order a police investigation into former Knesset Speaker Avraham Burg over what it called a breach of national security. According to the group, Burg compromised state security by publicly discussing Israel's alleged nuclear capabilities. "Israel has nuclear and chemical weapons," Burg said. "This was a grave statement, made deliberately, rather than unintentionally, at a conference calling for disarming the Middle East of nuclear weapons," Ometz said in its appeal to Weinstein. "Burg's statement, which appears to have been a criminal offense, must be dealt with in accordance with the law." Burg served as Knesset speaker between 1999 and 2003 as a member of the Labor party.
