Israel became the first country to showcase its own representative Japanese mascot, or yuru-chara, at the Yuru-Chara Grand Prix 2013 expo.
Mascots are a popular trend in Japan, and every year at the Yuru-Chara Grand Prix precincts and organizations throughout Japan design mascots to enter to the competition. This year there were 376 mascots on display, all Japanese, except for one. The Israeli embassy in Japan decided to take part in the project and created their own Israeli-Japanese mascot, which was named Shaloum chan.
The doll sparked the interest of many visitors and generated a lot of positive buzz around the embassy. The Israeli Embassy in Tokyo was proud to say Israel is the first and only country to have developed its own yuru-chara mascot in Japan.
