As the sun set on Friday evening and Yom Kippur began, the roar of engines disappeared from Israel's roads and was replaced with the laughter of children. Millions of Israelis went to synagogues for services, while others chose to take advantage of the empty roads to go bicycling.

During Yom Kippur, Magen David Adom paramedics were called to 2,566 incidents and 1,973 people were transported to hospitals. The combination of the Yom Kippur fast and high temperatures caused 130 people to faint. Some 16 people required resuscitation. Magen David Adom crews transported 145 pregnant women to hospitals to give birth and paramedics helped deliver six newborns at the homes of women who could not make it to hospitals.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his family attended the Kol Nidre service at Hazvi Yisrael synagogue in Jerusalem's Talbiya neighborhood. President Shimon Peres attended the same service.

With Yom Kippur over and Sukkot approaching later this week, many Israelis plan to vacation abroad during the coming days. Popular destinations include Barcelona, Crete, Rhodes, Kos, Antalya, Burgas, Prague and London.
