BDS: Firing on our own forces

The American Anthropological Association voted Tuesday against joining the boycott of Israeli academia. Although it was an exhausting struggle and only a slim majority rejected the BDS motion, enlightened academia still won out over darkness.

This was a turning point against the momentum of the BDS movement, which seeks to wipe out Israel. Would the world give up the fruits of Israeli research in the name of this boycott? The boycotters are welcome to go ahead and give up their computers and cell phones, which have critical components that were invented in Israeli research institutions. They should also give up other inventions, including medical devices developed in Israel that are now implanted in hearts around the world.

For years, former Palestinian Mufti Ekrima Sa'id Sabri incited against Israel's existence from his pulpit at the Al-Aqsa mosque. Yet, when he developed heart disease, he preferred to be treated at the Hadassah Ein Kerem "occupation" hospital, where he underwent angioplasty, coronary artery bypass grafting, blood transfusions (Jewish blood) and other procedures, rather than at the Al-Makassed Hospital, an Arab hospital in Jerusalem. When he recovered from his health problems, he preached even more hatred against the Jews than before he was hospitalized. Apparently, even with Jewish blood flowing through his veins, hypocrisy grew stronger.

The motives of the Jews who work against their own people and support BDS are enigmatic. Their sanctimonious activities are frequently presented as a search for justice and moral cleansing. However speaking of "morality" in this context is outrageous because this is a small, powerful political group with clear interests, a group elected by no one. These activists openly plot to sabotage Israel's interests, with the help of strangers, and in contravention of policy decisions made by elected officials. The absurd thing is that this is a sort of political terrorism designed to harm Israel, which has voluntarily bound itself by the rules of war and international law, which torments itself with debates about morality, with self-blame and flagellation, while it is surrounded by endless Islamic hell.

What is the motive? Do these Jews, who so enjoy the political, academic and economic embrace of those hostile to Israel, fear for their lives because of "Israel's recalcitrant policies," and are they now trying to sacrifice our existential interests to distinguish themselves from Israel and satisfy its opponents? Is money blinding them-

My late father Nachman Berko, a Holocaust refugee from Hungary, searched unsuccessfully until his death for an explanation for the disaster of the Jewish people in the Second Temple period. To this end, he scoured the books of historian Josephus. He did not understand why, with the Romans besieging the city, the defenders of Jerusalem set each other's food stores and fortifications on fire.

In war, there are situations in which the enemy besieges an outpost belonging to our forces. In such a case, the commander (not the deserters) orders to "fire on our forces." The efforts to boycott Israel in the West, particularly in the United States, are led by Palestinians, alongside anti-Semitic elements and Jews. As in our history, Jews both at home and abroad are once again "firing on our forces" while facing the enemy.

The Jews aiding the BDS movement in Israel and in the Diaspora, from J Street to Breaking the Silence, are rewarded materially and work in a sanctimonious anti-Israel political and social environment that "legitimizes" their subversion. Their clear goal is to strangle Israel's economic, moral, academic and governmental arteries with boycotts, forcing it to disappear. These Jews hear the repeated cry of BDS activists -- "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free" -- in the way that Hamas loyalists hear the repeated call for the destruction of Israel. They know that the slogan is a call for the murder of the Jewish people in Israel, but they do not call for illegal action to this end, and they are prepared to sacrifice us for their false sense of calm.

BDS reminds me of an autoimmune disease that attacks its own body. Scientists say these kinds of diseases develop in environments that are too careful, even obsessive, about cleanliness, which weakens the immune system. The American Anthropological Association rejected the boycott, we made it through Pharaoh's rule, and we will make it through BDS too, as over the years, Israel has developed a strong immune system.
