The murder of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was a terrible act that can never be forgiven. The despicable assassin, Yigal Amir, was tried in court and sentenced to life in prison. Nevertheless, for the past two decades the entire Right has been accused of complicity in the assassination, as if Amir had been ordered by the Right to conduct the killing. During its coverage of the Rabin memorial rally on Saturday night, the leftist media continued to fan the flames of hatred and enmity against right-wing leaders. As a rightist, I never felt a sense of guilt regarding the assassination. Amir acted on his own accord and all the claims that he was spurred to act by teachers, rabbis or spiritual leaders were proven false. Current U.S. President Barack Obama and former U.S President Bill Clinton are stuck in the past. The dream of peace has evaporated. The ongoing wave of Palestinian terrorism is further evidence of this. The bullets fired by Amir did not kill peace. Rather, it was the Palestinians and their leaders who did so by never coming to terms for even a moment with Israel's existence. It was the Palestinians who caused a majority of Israelis to abandon naive visions of peace. There is nothing more dangerous than rewriting history for political purposes. Compared to the speeches about peace delivered at the Rabin rally on Saturday night, the mass funerals held in Hebron earlier in the day for perpetrators of recent terrorist attacks (which were attended by Palestinian Authority representatives) provided a far more accurate view of the foreseeable future. This is why the theme of the Rabin rally was focused on "protecting democracy" rather than peace. The only thing that remains intact from the shattered Oslo-era visions of peace is the famous tune, "A Song for Peace." Every Israeli citizen has the duty to never forget the Rabin assassination. For thousands of years, Jews have fasted to lament the assassination of Gedaliah. We must remember that internal hatred and civil war pose a greater threat to us than any external enemy. Defending Israeli democracy is our obligation. Unfortunately, many self-proclaimed champions of democracy from the Left have never internalized the lessons of the Rabin assassination. Their incitement against the Right rages on unabated. Anyone who preaches democracy must first adopt its principles. I hope the young people at the Rabin rally on Saturday night will realize that democracy must be defended, so it will continue to exist to defend us.
Anti-Right incitement rages on
