Hundreds of new recruits made their way to the Israel Defense Forces induction base on Sunday as the military opened its doors to the August draft class for field units. Motivation to serve in combat units, however, showed a slight dip as only 70.3 percent of new recruits medically eligible to serve in a combat capacity expressed interest in doing so.

It was the lowest percentage in recent years in regards to combat motivation. In August of last year 72.3% of recruits requested to serve in combat units, and in August 2011 the percentage stood at 73.4%.

The enlistment class from last March also indicated decreased motivation, with only 71.6% of new recruits asking to serve as fighters, compared to 72.4% in March 2012.

Motivation peaked in March 2011, when 79.5% of new recruits sought combat service.

The IDF Spokesperson's Unit explained that motivation was still considered "high" saying, "In recent years, we have seen very high motivation to serve in combat units: 70% to 76% on average of new recruits who are eligible to do so express a willingness to serve in a combat capacity and are placed to meet a variety of objectives."
