Israeli gymnast wins bronze at European Championships

Alex Shatilov wins seventh career medal in European Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Romania • Israel Gymnastics Association chairman: Shatilov is a role model for next generation to look up to • Shatilov: This win gives me the drive to continue.

Israeli gymnast Alex Shatilov won a bronze medal in the floor exercise at the European Men's Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Romania on Saturday. This was his fifth bronze medal and seventh overall career medal.

Russian gymnast Dmitry Lankin took gold in the floor exercise and Romanian gymnast Marian Dragulescu won the silver.

Saturday's competition was Shatilov's first major championship since his disappointing performance at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Following the Rio Games, and knowing he will not participate in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Shatilov had considered retiring, but after his win Saturday, he said, "I'm glad I didn't retire and competed in another European championship. This win gives me the drive to continue."

Shatilov, 30, is expected to compete in September's World Championships in Montreal, Canada. He already has two World Championship bronze medals to his name.

"Shatilov is a rare talent," Israel Gymnastics Association Chairman Razi Peled told reporters after the meet. "He is a role model for the next generation to look up to."
