Any excuse to lash out

Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon has been under attack for almost a year and a half, but the criticism leveled at him has taken a dangerous turn recently, emerging as full-blown incitement over his condemnation of the soldier who shot a subdued terrorist in Hebron two weeks ago.

This perilous trend has exacerbated over the past two weeks, but it was only on Saturday that his fellow ministers broke their silence, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked, and Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz criticizing these delinquents, and Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid rushing to Ya'alon's defense from the opposition gallery.

Despite some of the statements made by Ya'alon's critics in the Likud and Habayit Hayehudi on camera, the fact is Israel exercises responsible military practices, by which most terrorists are killed while trying to carry out an attack, and not after they had been neutralized. This is why the Palestinians find it difficult to fan the flames.

Security policies do not guarantee success, especially given the fact that a conflict as prolonged and tense as the Israeli-Palestinian one could rarely come to a decisive result, but overall, they are a success -- one that has been steadily, tediously proven since Operation Protective Edge in the Gaza Strip in 2014.

The Hebron incident undercut this achievement, and immediately stating that the footage depicted an incident Israel finds utterly unacceptable was the right thing to do. This, however, soon turned into a snowball of questioning the military and its commanders' actions, followed by Ya'alon and IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gadi Eizenkot taking charge of the controversial ship swaying in the rough political debate.

The Hebron incident, however, is just the tip of the iceberg. Habayit Hayehudi leader Naftali Bennett and fellow party member Bezalel Smotrich are furious over the operational restraint Ya'alon shows, and they are equally enraged by the fact that while Ya'alon will, at times, express reservations over High Court of Justice ruling, he fully subscribes to the judiciary's superiority, as seen by his intolerance for illegal outposts and the fact that he carries out court orders to raze illegal buildings.

The struggle within the coalition over defense establishment policies in Judea and Samaria is what is truly vexing about how the Likud, Habayit Hayehudi and various organizations are locking horns over the extent of settlement construction and the rule of law.

Removing Ya'alon from the defense establishment's helm may cause an earthquake not only in Israel but in the United States and among the American Jewish community as well.
