Danon angles for top Likud positions

Deputy Defense Minister Danny Danon expected to be elected head of Likud convention on Tuesday • Danon also running for chairmanship of Likud central committee • Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz, MK Miri Regev running for head of Likud secretariat.

Deputy Defense Minister Danny Danon is expected to be elected as the head of the Likud convention on Tuesday. His term will be very short, however, as the convention will close next week.

On Sunday, Danon will also run for the chairmanship of the Likud central committee. His opponents will be Michael Fuah and Yossi Shavo. Shimon Sussan has withdrawn from the race.

Danon prompted controversy recently when he said in an interview that the Israeli government does not support a two-state solution to the conflict with the Palestinians. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later refuted Danon's claim.

Other positions up for grabs in Sunday's elections are the leadership roles of the party's secretariat, office and court, as well as spots on the constitution committee.

Candidates for the chairmanship of the secretariat include Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz and MK Miri Regev. Deputy Foreign Minister Ze'ev Elkin and former MK Eli Gabai are running for head of the Likud office. MK Tzachi Hanegbi is competing for a spot on the constitution committee.

Likud members have until Wednesday to submit their candidacies for Sunday's elections.
