Iconic military magazine to go digital after 82 years in print
IDF's official magazine, Bamahane, prints its final edition • IDF Spokesperson's Unit will take over magazine and publish a monthly digital edition on new website • Magazine is "being upgraded and made more compatible with the present era," IDF says.
The Israel Defense Forces' official magazine, Bamahane ("On the Base"), printed its final edition on Tuesday, effectively shutting down after 82 years of circulation.
The soldiers serving in the magazine's unit will either be released from the military or transferred to other units.
The magazine, long a part of the country's cultural tapestry, was first printed as a mouthpiece for the Haganah, the pre-state paramilitary organization that eventually became the IDF. Many of its graduates have gone on to prominent careers in the Israeli media or in politics.
The IDF plans to transfer the Bamahane brand to the IDF Spokesperson's Unit, including to the new website it expects to launch soon. In the future, a monthly digital edition of the magazine will be published online.
"Bamahane magazine is not closing," the IDF Spokesperson's Unit said in a statement. "Rather, it is being upgraded and made more compatible with the present era. As such, the goal of the changes is to make the magazine more accessible with a digital version."
