New cabinet secretary: US-born David Sharan

David Sharan, currently the chief of staff of PM Benjamin Netanyahu's office, will fill vacancy left by Avichai Mendelblit's appointment as attorney general earlier this year • Yoav Horowitz to serve as Netanyahu's next chief of staff.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Monday the appointment of David Sharan as his new cabinet secretary. The previous cabinet secretary, Avichai Mendelblit, left the post earlier this year to become attorney general.

Since Mendeblit's change in jobs, the position of cabinet secretary has been filled in the interim by Aryeh Zohar.

Sharan is currently the chief of staff on Netanyahu's office. Once Sharan becomes cabinet secretary, the chief of staff position will be filled by Yoav Horowitz, the CEO of Avis in Israel.

Sharan, who was born in the U.S, is a lieutenant colonel in the IDF reserves and served as Yuval Steinitz's chief of staff when Steinitz was finance minister.
