"We demand that a trickle of rockets [into Israel] not become the permanent work plan for terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip," Sderot Mayor Alon Davidi told GOC Southern Command Maj. Gen. Sami Turgeman during a meeting on Sunday, a day after a rocket fired from Gaza exploded in the Hof Ashkelon region, the latest incident in a recent spate of sporadic rocket fire from Gaza. "Summer vacation is ahead of us and the memory of Operation Protective Edge is still fresh. More than anything, we want answers and solutions, so our children can get through the summer without rockets and without a war," Davidi said. Turgeman said the Israel Defense Forces was operating on all levels to try to prevent rocket fire from Gaza. "We're talking about a few rockets exploding in open areas," Turgeman said, referring to the three rockets that have struck southern Israel over the past two weeks. "The IDF will respond in a pinpoint manner to rocket fire, but it will not launch an operation in Gaza due to a few rockets. "The IDF understands Hamas wants quiet and is making efforts to prevent rocket fire, but the State of Israel still views Hamas as responsible for what takes place in the Gaza Strip." In light of the recent rocket fire from Gaza, Iron Dome anti-rocket batteries are currently deployed in the Ashdod, Netivot and Ashkelon areas of southern Israel. At the start of Sunday's cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, "Israel holds Hamas responsible for all firing from the Gaza Strip at our territory. I have not heard anyone in the international community condemn this firing; neither has U.N. said a word. It will be interesting if this silence continues when we use our full strength to uphold our right to defend ourselves. Let it be clear: The spreading hypocrisy in the world will not tie our hands and prevent us from protecting Israel's citizens. Thus we have acted; thus we will act." Meanwhile, tensions continue to run high in Gaza between Hamas and the Islamic State-affiliated Salafi group responsible for the recent rocket fire at Israel. The Salafis have threatened to keep launching rockets at Israel, imperiling the calm that has reigned since Operation Protective Edge last summer, if Hamas does not stop arresting members of the group.
