American singer Lauryn Hill canceled a performance scheduled this week in Rishon Lezion, near Tel Aviv, saying that she did not want to perform in central Israel without also performing in the Palestinian city of Ramallah. Hill, like many other artists panning performances in Israel, was subject to pressure to join a cultural boycott of the country. The singer-songwriter said in a statement Monday that she originally intended to perform in both cities in hopes of being "a presence supporting justice and peace," though she did not specifically mention the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement. She said setting up a show in Ramallah "proved to be a challenge." Not wanting to alienate fans in either city, Hill canceled her concert in Israel, which had been scheduled for Thursday. Hill said she was seeking a different approach to bring her music to fans in the region. She said she was hoping for healing in the area and "the openness necessary for lasting resolution and reconciliation." Hill last performed in Israel in 2007.
