The Israeli mint announced on Monday that it would issue gold, silver and bronze medallions in honor of the late Lt. Gen. Amnon Lipkin-Shahak, the Israel Defense Forces' 15th chief of staff. Lipkin-Shahak's medallions will be the 14th in the Israel Coins and Medals Corporation's IDF chiefs of staff series.
The mint said it would release the medals on Tuesday, which would have been Lipkin-Shahak's 70th birthday.
The medallion design is by renowned graphic artist Igal Gabay. Sixty 14-karat gold medallions will be produced, each weighing 17 grams and with a diameter of 30.5 millimeters. A total of 360 sterling silver pendants and 1,000 bronze medallions will also be minted. The silver medals weigh 62 grams each and have a 50 millimeter diameter, while the bronze medallions weigh 98 grams each and have a diameter of 59 millimeters.
Lipkin-Shahak passed away on Dec. 18, 2012, after a long battle with cancer.
