Indian prime minister brings 'hug diplomacy' to Israel

Why are India-Israel relations growing closer and more public now? • What symbolic and practical effects did Narendra Modi's visit have? • Host Steve Ganot speaks with columnist Ruthie Blum about the state of relations between Israel and India.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Israel last week has been widely hailed as a major diplomatic success and a significant milestone in relations between the two countries.

India voted against the 1947 United Nations plan to partition then-British Palestine into separate Jewish and Arab states, and against Israel's admission to the U.N. in 1949, but recognized Israel in 1950. Still, full diplomatic relations between the two countries were not established until 1992, and open ties remained limited until recent years.

Today, those ties are flourishing. India and Israel have forged a strategic partnership, which includes extensive intelligence sharing; the joint development of advanced weapons; scientific, technological and agricultural cooperation; cultural and educational exchanges; and billions of dollars annually in trade.

In the aftermath of this historic first visit to Israel by an Indian prime minister, Opinion Editor Steve Ganot speaks with columnist Ruthie Blum about the state of Israel-India relations.
