IAF strikes Gaza targets after Qassam rocket wounds woman

Rocket falls near Bedouin tent • Woman treated for shrapnel wounds • "We cannot ignore sporadic bombardments," says regional council head Yair Farjoun • Shaky calm in Gaza envelope communities.

The Israel Air Force struck two strategic targets in the Gaza Strip early Tuesday after a Bedouin woman in her 50s was injured by a Qassam fired by Gaza militants Monday night.

An Israel Defense Forces spokesperson said the IDF would not tolerate attempts to harm Israeli citizens and would respond with severity to such attempts.

The Bedouin woman and her family had set up tents in an open area near Ashkelon when sirens sounded warning of incoming rockets around 10 p.m. Monday. Wthe Qassam rocket exploded nearby, the woman was injured by shrapnel after failing to find a place to take cover.

The Homefront Command sent a team, headed by new regional commander Col. Doron Mor, to investigate the rocket.

“Rockets fired into open ground are just like rockets fired into urban centers,” regional council head Yair Farjoun said on Monday night. “We cannot ignore sporadic bombardments, and the IDF must issue a harsh response, as the next rocket could fall in a settled area and cause much greater damage.”

Dozens of Bedouin tents have been erected in and around the Ashkelon region recently as part of an annual cycle in which herders settle in the area for a few months while tending to their flocks, Farjoun said.

The Qassam was the second in several days. A shaky calm in the communities bordering the Gaza Strip was shattered last Thursday when a Qassam fell into open ground in the Ashkelon region.
