A total of 10,694 Israeli couples divorced in 2012, with the highest number (711) in Tel Aviv. Jerusalem followed closely behind with 705 divorced couples.

Overall, the divorce rate in Israel in 2012 was a little over 14% higher than a decade ago.

The number of divorces granted to women whose husbands had disappeared either inside Israel or abroad rose to 163 in 2012, compared to 97 the previous year. Women whose husbands disappear or refuse to divorce them, are known as "agunot" or chained women.

The number of restraining orders granted to women against violent husbands rose to 156 in 2012, from 81 the previous year.

In 2012, some 88,055 new cases were opened in rabbinical courts, up from 80,636 in 2011. Of these cases, 9,045 involved divorce issues, 4,237 involved clarifications of religious status and 3,640 involved inheritance issues.

"The data shows that last year thousands more cases were opened in rabbinical courts than in the previous year, indicating the public's satisfaction with the functioning of the courts," the Rabbinical Courts Administration said. "In the past year, we succeeded in almost doubling the number of agunot who received divorces, and we are constantly acting to impose sanctions on husbands who refuse to give their wives divorces."
