Israel's current airstrikes on Gaza are justified, according to a majority of Americans surveyed by a CNN/ORC International poll published Monday. The poll shows that 57 percent of the American public believes Israel is justified in its military action against Hamas in Gaza, with only one in every four Americans saying the attacks are unjustified. "Although most Americans think the Israeli actions are justified, there are key segments of the public who don't necessarily feel that way," CNN Polling Director Keating Holland said. "Only four in 10 Democrats think the Israeli actions in Gaza are justified, compared to 74% of Republicans and 59% of independents. Support for Israel's military action is 13 points higher among men than among women, and 15 points higher among older Americans than among younger Americans." The survey also indicates that nearly six in 10 Americans sympathize with Israelis, with 13% saying they sympathize more with the Palestinians, and 11% saying they don't sympathize either side. "That's nothing new," said Holland. "The number of Americans who sympathize more with the Palestinians has never been higher than 18% since the question was first asked in 1988. Sympathies for Israel have sometimes dipped below 50%, but have been over that mark for the past eight years." The poll sampled 1,023 adult Americans by telephone on Nov. 16-18 and has a 3% margin of error. The CNN/ORC survey comes after a Haaretz poll found on Monday that an overwhelming 84% of Israelis support the current assault on Gaza. The poll showed, however, that only 30% of Israelis want a ground invasion.
