Jerusalem is Israel's most populous city, with 804,355 residents, almost twice as many as Tel Aviv, according to a recent Knesset Research and Information Center report. More than a third of Israel's population (36 percent) lives in its 10 largest cities, the report found, with one in every 10 people (10.2% of the population) living in Jerusalem. Tel Aviv came in second place, with 404,750 residents. Haifa is ranked the third largest city, with a population of 270,348. According to the report, Rishon Lezion continues to grow rapidly and is in fourth place, with 232,410 people. Ashdod comes in fifth, with 212,278. While Tel Aviv is considered Israel's cultural hub and houses the majority of its embassies, Jerusalem is the official capital.
