The Israel Police Fraud Division raided a number of ultra-Orthodox yeshivas in Jerusalem and Betar Illit on Sunday morning, in connection with alleged money laundering and fraud for fictitious students, police said in a statement. Police confiscated documents, computers and files. They said the case involved "millions of shekels" in fraudulently obtained stipends for fictitious yeshiva students. A number of expensive vehicles belonging to yeshiva administrators were also confiscated, and five people were either arrested or detained for questioning. Israel Radio said the case was the fourth time this year that police had cracked instances of fraud involving fictitious students at yeshivas, which receive government funding. Three of the raided yeshivas are reportedly affiliated with the Zos Habracha non-profit organization, and those arrested are alleged to have embezzled millions of shekels by collecting funds for 1,500 fictitious students. One of the people in custody is reportedly connected to the ongoing Hadrei Haredim website investigation.
